Spring 2005

A VIEW FROM THE HELM
by Rick Sharpe

It's finally here! Spring! No more winter, snow, salt, slush, school closings, and all the other crummy things that come that time of the year. It's time to start making preparations to get our treasures out of mothballs and ready for the upcoming season. The theme for this season is participation. The chapter has some upcoming events this spring and summer that are free of charge to chapter members and are always a good time. I'm encouraging all members to make a real effort this year to get out on the water at some of these chapter sponsored events and enjoy.

We will get dates out well in advance as I am aware that the summer can be a very busy time for most people and locking in dates can be a difficult task. At the time of this writing we don't have any concrete dates yet except for the Boat Festival June 17 - 19 in St. Michaels. This, however, is an excellent opportunity for many of you new and old to the club to get out and get involved in something fun and rewarding. Bring your boat or don't bring your boat, it doesn't matter. There is always room for a few more to go for rides and this year we are planning a nice Friday the 17th River Cruise. This event is something the show committee felt has been lacking the last 4 or 5 years and needs to be resurrected again. This event is a casual "bring your own everything" event that (weather permitting) will depart St. Michaels and either trek up and around Wye Island or run up the Miles River. Both rivers are very scenic with plenty of creeks to explore if that is what you prefer. Charts will be provided so go at your own pace and enjoy! Announcements will be made signaling the start of this event. Upon returning we will be preparing the "Patriot" for the Friday dinner cruise, always a good time. Saturday is all about the boats, judging begins at 9am so there is plenty of time to detail boats before the judges show up. The grounds of the museum will be teaming with patrons of all ages and backgrounds that make for a very exciting atmosphere. There will be many maritime vendors "under the tent" for everyone to check out their wares.

Saturday culminates with an excellent catered meal right there on the museum grounds. This is a great way to meet other enthusiasts to talk boats, engines, or to find out where that certain judge lives. An evening cruise is always a good idea after dinner to cap off a great day. The Sunday awards brunch is the unofficial conclusion of the Boat Festival. After a fine catered meal the judged events are final and awards are passed out to those deserving boats and owners. This however, is just the beginning of the boating season and I really hope to see many of you out on the water at other chapter-sponsored events.
