Summer 2005

A VIEW FROM THE HELM
by Rick Sharpe

Greetings fellow classic boaters! I trust everyone had a pleasurable summer boating season and why not with the wonderful weather we had. Aside from high gas prices I think it was one of the best summers we've had in recent memory. The Chesapeake Bay Chapter got off to a great start with the Annual Boat Festival in St. Michaels. Again, for the first time in recent years we had picture perfect weather and consequently an excellent turnout. The Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum has never looked better. The grounds were in excellent shape and the new Play on the Bay exhibit was up and running. This exhibit depicts the bay as a place of recreation and the history of that recreation is told through wonderful pictures, vintage boats and displays. This addition to the Museum was clearly well planned and executed and the end result is outstanding.

As we have had in the past "vendor alley" gave the show that extra added flavor that is truly unique to our show and continues to be and excellent draw. Thanks to Lois and Jim Duffy for pulling it off. Jackie Collins and Joe Howell did a wonderful job with the ships' store that was a huge success. With great success we relocated the Registration table to the oyster shed adjacent to Vendor registration to help maximize resources. But, mostly it was to keep out of the sun. Joan and Greg Howell handled this thankless task that as far as I know was fairly uneventful considering the drama that some colorful individuals tend to stir up. The "Field of Dreams" under the direction of Ray Glenn was a little diamond in the rough and we hope Ray will continue to organize this event. The sound system again was nothing short of awesome, having the vintage music playing throughout all 10 acres of the Museums grounds added to the overall experience. Please congratulate Dominic Fiaschetti the next time you see him, he puts in a lot of hours to make the sound happen. There are so many others that work behind the scenes that make the show happen, Mike Kirby handled publicity, Chuck Warner our dockmaster, Ginny Firth put together the catering and the many that volunteered at the loading ramp and other areas. Jim and Diana Shotwell, Linda Nagle-Warner with the Kids' program, Darrell Maples who does all our printing and all the other members that pitched in thanks to all. Last but certainly not least Maryann Fiaschetti our Festival Chairman who tirelessly pulls it all together to make it happen.

Fortunately we had a great after show meeting at Len Renkenbergers house where we ironed out some issues and will try to improve on these next year. Many of you did attend the Severn River cruise and picnic at Lois and Jim Duffy's house on the Severn.

After a fairly lengthy cruise down the Severn to Annapolis and in and out of "Ego Alley" we managed to get back up river for an outstanding lunch at the Duffy's. (The shrimp salad was awesome) It is quite a scene to look down at their dock and see nothing but classic woodies all tied up. For those that were unable to attend we are trying to organize a fall cruise/picnic on the South River October 22, hosted by Tom and Marcia Auth. There will be more information on this event coming soon. I look forward to seeing you on the water!

Rick
