A VIEW FROM THE HELM by Capt. Jim Shotwell The summer boating season is finally here; but, it's hard to believe that the 19th annual Boat Festival has already come and gone. This year's festival was once again a great success thanks to tireless efforts of our Festival Chairman Capt. Maryann Fiaschetti, her committee chairs and the many chapter members who volunteer. These members spend much of their time before, during and after the event making it possible for all who attend to have a fabulous time. To all of you "Thank you from the bottom of my heart". Next year will be our 20th Festival and we want it to be outstanding so please come out and help with the planning. Its great fun and being part of the organization of the festival is so rewarding that I guarantee you'll have a great time. The youth development area was a bee hive of activity again this year; but, please help us interest those children, grand children and their friends in the 9 to 19 year age group. At this years Festival we did not have any entries for the Junior Craftsman Awards and we need to work on that front. Let's not forget "Our youth are the future, show them the way". The Youth Development Committee has a James Craft Kit Boat to build and we are looking for interested volunteers and a place centrally located to our membership where a program can be held. The object is to build the runabout with the youth of our chapter or any youth organizations in which they belong. Please call if you have interest in helping teach our youth the craft of wooden boat building through this ACBS sponsored kit boat program or with suggestions on youth groups that may have interest. Rick Sharpe, your immediate past president, has informed me that our application for a 501-C3 designation with the IRS is nearing completion and we, as a chapter, will soon enjoy the benefits it offers. We'll keep you posted. The final report on the financial success of the Festival is not yet complete but will be made available as soon as it is. Our program chair is now hard at work preparing for on the water events for the membership, so watch the mail for the notices. Diana and I are attending ACBS shows around the country as part of my chairmanship of Youth Development on the international level and hope to you see you at one these events and on the water at a Chesapeake Bay Chapter outing. Here's wishing you safe boating,, BE WELL and as always .......
