Winter 2003

HERE’S A PLAN!
by Bill Backer

As one boating season comes to a close it’s time to plan for 2003. A recommendation to you is to set aside some time in early August 2003 to take an easy trip to the Thousand Islands region of upstate New York and visit Clayton.  Participation in the 39th Annual Antique Boat Show is highly recommended and loads of fun.  Visiting Clayton and the surrounding area is taking a trip back in time!  Although I didn’t count, I believe we saw more wooden boats than fiberglass!  It seemed one was more beautiful than the next and they weren’t all in the museum either.  Some were beautiful Canadian built boats that we down here in the Mid-Atlantic don’t often get to see.

Alex and Linda Kolosky and my wife Sue and I ventured to this competition with the idea that it was a “must see” place and we were delighted with our findings.  The competition was fierce, 130 boats were judged and even more were on display.  Alex and I stood up well against the stiff competition.  What’s important is what we learned about our own boats, about wooden boats in the future and ideas for our boats in the future.  We learned about presenting our boats to the judges.  I don’t think we could have gathered this information elsewhere, except in Clayton under the watchful eyes of the Antique and Classic Boat Society whose headquarters are in Clayton.

Make a plan - if you’ve not been there it’s a must.  If you have enjoyed Clayton, consider returning.
