A VIEW FROM THE HELM by Rick Sharpe Greetings fellow boaters, I hope this writing finds everyone well and relaxed as the hustle and chaos that is Christmas and New Years is behind us. I realize that the days are still short and cold and seeing all that snow on the ground doesn't help the situation. The only thing that could be more depressing is seeing your classic boat all covered up with all that aforementioned snow on it. Alas, all is not lost, the truth is the days are in fact getting longer and the snow will eventually melt and we can dream of speeding down a quiet lake all cylinders firing in perfect harmony and fresh varnish glistening in the morning sun. It just doesn't get any better than that. Well back to reality, beginning January 31st we will begin the process of planning this years' events and boat festival. On the back cover of this issue there is a schedule of meetings in preparation for these events. This is an excellent time for new or old members who want more than just to receive mailings concerning upcoming events and get involved in the planning and execution of these events. The best part of this is not being involved in the planning process but meeting new and interesting people along the way. These friendships can be long lasting and very beneficial especially in the small world of wooden boats. There are many areas of interest in the planning of River Cruises, Workshops, and especially the Boat Festival. The Boat Festival in St. Michaels is the clubs marquee event. It has grown into and institution in the Mid Atlantic Region drawing participants from all of our bordering states and then some. With more than 100 boats and antique motors on display a myriad of nautical vendors is also present it's truly a weekend event. One of my duties as your President is to monitor the health and viability of the Chapter. Fortunately the state of our Chapter is excellent. Our membership continues to rise which indicates a growing interest in classic boating and with this increase in membership comes a healthy treasury. The board of directors and I will be meeting soon to pour over last years revenues and expenses and compare them to plan that was approved last January. We will then decide where we want to take the Chapter this coming year and adhere to that plan. I look forward to meeting many of you new members at some of the upcoming events that the Chapter will sponsor this year. Until then keep thinking warm thoughts.
