The Editor's Corner by Rick Sharpe Yet another season and come and gone, and we all prepare for another long winter and dream of warm summer days out on the water. Some of us are anxious to begin new exciting projects and some of us are trying to complete old ones. I hope that in either case all is going well and look forward to hearing all about the trials and errors that may have presented themselves along the way. I would like on behalf the entire Chapter to give Tom and Marcia Auth a much deserved thank-you for their hosting of the fall picnic. The theme was Oktoberfest and it sure lived up to its billing, wonderful German food and a festive atmosphere made for a wonderful time even if Mother Nature didn't cooperate. I would be remiss in didn't include a quick state of the Chapter in this the final Stuffing Box issue of the year. As both your President and Newsletter editor I have a fair amount of insight into the inner workings of the club. When I took responsibility for The Stuffing Box almost 5 years ago we had a membership mailing of 182. I can remember thinking that was pretty good but felt we could do better. We now have a mailing list of 292! That's a 60% increase in just five years, let's see what the next five years brings us. Some of you may be wondering why this is important, well here it is in a nutshell. Membership = A healthy treasury. A healthy treasury means lots ofthings to John Q. Member. It means the club is able to put on more events at no charge or at a reduced rate to the member thus keeping that member active for future events. But more importantly it allows us to donate money to worthy organizations that help to further our passion for education on the restoration and preservation of classic watercraft. Another huge success with generating money is the Boat Festival in St. Michaels. This event has grown from humble beginnings in the early nineties to a regional event every June. Simply put membership is up and the Treasury is healthy. Well here it is my parting shot as your President. It is hard to believe that it has been two years since I was elected, how time flies! I would like to thank so many volunteers that made my tenure a smooth and enjoyable experience. First, all the officers that are the real backbone of the club, they handle the tasks that require effort on a regular basis. Secondly, the board of directors whose advice and ideas have been an invaluable resource both to me and the Chapter. Finally my wife Susan who has put up with my absence at meetings and other events to look after our children, without her I'd be lost. I hope that we kept the course for future leaders of the club and that they create as many memories as I have. See you on the water!
